Concerns about methylmercury exposure from fish consumption have prompted numerous fish consumption advisories.  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in 2006 there were more than 3000 active fish advisories for mercury across the U.S.  The U.S. EPA and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) developed general guidelines for pregnant women and women of childbearing age in order to protect fetuses from methylmercury.  Many state agencies have also developed fish consumption advisories.  The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) has developed a state-wide fish consumption advisory for mercury.  In addition, ODEQ also developed a fish consumption advisory for the Tar Creek Watershed, based on potential exposure to lead associated with mining activities in the Tri-State Mining District.
